چکیده

The normalized radar backscatter (σ) in scatterometer measurements over water is theorized to go to zero below a threshold wind speed due to insufficient friction between the wind and water to create capillary waves from which the radar signal scatters. Evidence of the threshold wind speed and a hysteresis effect have been observed in airship and wave tank data. The threshold wind speed is additionally evidenced in tower-mounted scatterometer data in an uncontrolled marine environment. In situ wind measurements and corresponding σ values obtained from YSCAT, an ultra-wideband scatterometer deployed on the Canada Centre for InlandWaters research tower at lake Ontario, are used to detect and estimate the threshold wind speed. A detectable threshold is evidenced in approximately 1/2 of the observations. The observed threshold wind speeds correspond well to theoretical threshold wind speeds.

Investigation of Vertical Wind Shear Characteristics Using 50m Meteorological Tower Data

Wind measurement is important for estimating wind energy potential, but it is relatively cost-intensive and often conducted at a narrow height from the ground level. The typical range of most turbine hub heights is from 30-50 m or even higher. Extrapolation on wind data thus becomes necessary to estimate the wind speed at different heights. Doing so requires the essential understanding of wind ...

Optimal Height for a Wind Tower on a Building in Yazd

Wind is one of the cleanest and cheapest renewable energies. One of the wind energy production technologies is use of small wind turbines installed in urban areas. However, installing these turbines in urban areas is associated with problems such as low wind speed and turbulence but if installed in the wrong location, their generated electricity is zero. In this study for the use of wind energy...

Evaluation of a compound probability model with tower-mounted scatterometer data

Six months of data from the YSCAT94 experiment conducted at the CCIW WAVES research platform on Lake Ontario, Canada, are analyzed to evaluate a compound probability model. YSCAT was an ultrawideband small footprint ( 1 m) microwave scatterometer that operated at frequencies of 2–18 GHz, incidence angles from 0 to 60 , both h-pol and v-pol, and which tracked the wind using simultaneous weather ...

Investigating the Effect of Land Use and Soil’s Physio-chemical properties on Wind Erosion Threshold Velocities via Data Mining

Introduction: Wind erosion is a phenomenon that causes severe environmental changes in arid and semi-arid climates. As surface soil texture is very effective in soil erodibility, identifying soil erodibility index is important and efficient. Mismanagement greatly contributes to the development of wind erosion. The velocity that makes the first particles of soil move from the surface is called t...
